Dougal founded Powrie Appleby in 1999. He first learnt about tax as an Inspector of Taxes, joining HMRC in 1973 and then moving on to qualify as a chartered accountant with what became KPMG in 1982 after a year spent advising entrepreneurs about tax planning. By 1985 he was a partner in KPMG in Leicester and soon became senior tax partner in that office. He carried on for some 13 years running the KPMG tax practice in Leicester and specialised largely in advising entrepreneurs and their companies although he also had a considerable role in advising the building society movement and its (subsequently somewhat unfortunate) movement to plc status.
Dougal’s main leisure time activities are watching rugby (he is a Leicester Tigers season ticket holder and shareholder) travelling, spending time in his idyllic house in the Dordogne, walking and reading.
Since the beginning of April Dougal has had rather more time for all of these activities because he now works only part time but, he would like to stress, although it is part time he certainly does work!
Dougal’s role within the firm was redefined when he moved to part time working and the focus is:
Over the years, Dougal has been a fairly regular lecturer on tax topics (he originally trained as a teacher) but he does less of that than he used to and prefers to focus on the internal stuff.
He also litigates in front of the Tribunal on behalf of clients and the firm.
Dougal is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales, a non-practicing barrister, a member of STEP as well as being a fully trained Inspector of Taxes.
