Who is Colin?
Colin originally trained as a Chartered Accountant but had already decided to pursue a career in tax by the time he qualified in 1984 and moved to the tax department of what is now a ‘Big-4’ firm. He was admitted as a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1987 before moving on to the tax department of another national accountancy firm where he reached the position of tax partner. He joined Powrie Appleby in 2004.
Now that their three children have left home, Colin and his wife have more time to enjoy travelling and the recent addition of a dog means that long walks now fill up much of their spare time. Colin also has a large collection of tropical fish and says that watching them is usually more interesting than anything to be found on the TV. He also enjoys reading and getting to grips with a tricky crossword.
What else does Colin do?
Colin has many years’ experience of dealing with all taxes and the interaction between them and so is able to advise on clients’ tax problems ‘in the round’ rather than just focus on one particular tax issue. Much of his time is now spent advising on tax planning with an overseas element, including the application of the continuously developing Community Law principles on UK tax legislation. This type of tax planning often involves a ‘one-off’ event in the life of an OMB such as a sale of shares or a sale of company property. As well as advising the tax planning aspects of the transactions, Colin and his team have a wealth of experience dealing with the associated non-tax issues which often arise.

Who is Pete?
Pete joined Powrie Appleby LLP in 2009. He trained as an Inspector of Taxes with the Inland Revenue and spent 10 very happy years there, with Head Office postings to Policy Division – Capital Allowances and Taxation of the Film Industry – and Technical Division – Company Distributions, Demergers, M&A Transactions. Since leaving the Revenue, Pete worked for 11 years in ‘Big 4’ firms before joining Powrie Appleby last year. In 2010 he celebrates 22 years in tax.
Pete spends most of his spare time indulging in his favourite pastime, eating, particularly curry, and he has made a detailed study of many of the Indian restaurants in Leicester and beyond! He also loves to cook - including, not surprisingly, curry – and he is also a fan of fine wines (when he can afford them) and real ales. Pete also enjoys watching football (he supports Watford) and rugby (Leicester Tigers), although he doesn’t get to see either team live as often as he would like. Pete is married and lives in Stoneygate with his wife and a goldfish.
Pete has worked with clients on all aspects of UK tax, particularly income tax, corporation tax and capital gains tax. He has also specialised in:
Pete is a regular contributor to books and journals, including Taxation (often answering Readers’ Forum queries under the pseudonym ‘Hornets Fan’ or under his own name), The Tax Journal and Simon's Direct Tax Service. Pete’s recent articles can be accessed here:
He is also co-author of Taxation of Company Reorganisations (Bloomsbury Professional, 3rd edition, December 2009).
Pete also speaks frequently at conferences.
Pete is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, as well as being an examiner for the CTA exams and a member of the CIoT Education Committee.
He is also a member of the Editorial Boards of The Tax Journal and Simon’s Taxes.
